home about ymca philanthropy parenting home about ymca philanthropy parenting search by typing & pressing enter your cart jolly fitness family fun, fitness ​& philanthropy join in! sunshine state muscle car club fall fling auto show to benefit habitat for humanity november 12th, 2017. 8am-3pm every year in november, the sunshine state muscle car club sponsors a car show to help out local charity organizations in hernando county. the proceeds from this past show were designated to the local chapter of habitat for humanity . hfh is dear to our hearts. we have helped on several builds and personally know several families whose lives have been changed forever because they were able to become home owners. anyway, it's a great event. and very fun. owners of vintage cars and trucks, muscles cars and hot rods, can enter their vehicles into a contest for about 15 bucks. the rest of us get to walk around oohing over the splashy paint jobs, the gleaming chrome and the lick-clean engines while eating scrumptious hotdogs and burgers. we like to put the littlest in the stroller, lather on the sunscreen and enjoy the crowd. it is good clean fun and something really different than our usual outings. family: anything that gets our family away from the tv and computer and outside doing things together is a go in our minds. not really fitness, but definitely fun: you will be walking around for a couple hours. and it is really fun to be around positive people who are really passionate about their cars and about helping other people. philanthropy: the proceeds from the day go to habitat for humanity. the event is sponsored by brooksville transmission and complete automotive care on their properties which are next to each other on highway 50 as you head west towards spring hill. crop hunger walks - time to join in florida! february 27, 2017 the winning design for crop's 2017 tee shirt. you may not be up for running like a princess, or swimming in the ocean. maybe you don't like to run. we get it. but, c'mon people...everyone can walk! we found out about crop hunger walks through our friends, the phillips. crop is a non-profit org that focuses on raising funds with one simple goal: to feed people. the organization was started in 1947 to help farmers in the mid-west share their surplus crops with a hungry post wwarii europe. since then, the money raised has gone to locations all over the world to buy seed and animals, build wells and water systems, and provide tools and technical training to help people facing hunger to become self-sufficient in obtaining their food. their site at www.crophungerwalk.com and their facebook page at @crophungerwalk are full of information about scheduled walks and stories about those who have benefited from their service. the website features a super cool interactive map showing you walks taking place all over the usa. we were particularly impressed by our home state, florida. we counted 18 walks total already for 2017 and most of those are right here in central florida. we had at least half a dozen walks within an hours drive from our homes from which to choose. we chose the north sun coast walk held in february for two reasons: a great time of year to be outside and this area is just beautiful. there are many really good restaurants to try for lunch, many of them right on the gulf or the homosassa river. family: this is probably one of the nicest events we have ever done as a family group. no stress. easy to get there, park and engage in the event. this time of year, the inlets and the river are full of manatees. we saw tons of them plus baby alligators and turtles. after the walk, we went to charlie's fish house in crystal river and feasted on locally farmed oysters and hush puppies. fitness: there was a short one mile hike or a longer several mile hike. there is no shortage of wildlife to see in this area which makes for interesting walking. philanthropy: this is so easy. sign up, gather some pledges, do the walk, have a great time! now, for something completely different: tai chi for the whole family august 25, 2016 in june, we visited our nana in ohio and she was a changed woman! six months ago, at 86 years of age, she began to practice tai chi, an ancient martial art form from china. martial art? 86 year old? what?! it's true. nana insists that she no longer needs her walker and claims she has cut the dose of her arthritis meds in half. all by practicing tai chi. after spending several evenings with her playing jeopardy, we sure think it hasn't hurt her mind either! so, upon our return home, we began to look into tai chi. our research showed us several things: tai chi is a martial art from china. there are five styles taught here in the u.s.: chen, wu, another wu, yang and sun. we chose a school that teaches chen tai chi. anyone can practice tai chi, no matter your fitness level or your age. our school starts children at age 5. tai chi has been shown to improve flexibility, balance and muscle strength and produce a calming, centering effect. three important parts of tai chi are: qi - (pronounced 'chee') the movement of energy through your body yin and yang - opposing forces in nature that are balanced through the practice of tai chi qijong - movements and breathing together to calm and focus the body, mind and soul we decided we wanted to engage in something new and family building over the summer and tai chi seemed to fill the bill. we began to look for an instructor near us and we consider ourselves fortunate to have found steve contes. steve is experienced in numerous forms of martial arts and devoted to helping people to be their best selves. he offers classes in tampa, at the taiji center in port richey and at anytime fitness in spring hill. our reasons for trying tai chi are varied: we were a bit burned out from all the races and racing around. we also wanted to bring our family together on a more regular basis rather than just the monthly fun run or charity swim. and, most important of all, we need it. as weekend athletes and 24/7 parents, our aches and pains were beginning to get the better of us. also, two of our children struggle with learning challenges including mild attention deficit. we are willing to try just about anything to help them along. if it helps us, the parents, too...so much the better. our youngest practitioner is 7 and our oldest is 52. so far, we are learning a lot and we are being stretched...in body and in brain! we are excited about this new chapter of fitness in our lives! family: we are nurturing our minds, bodies and souls together. this nurtures our family, too. fitness: our youngest practitioner is 7 and our oldest is 52. we can all do it. philanthropy: one reason we really like steve and went with him for lessons is that he trains some kids for free. that's okay by us! in fact, it's more than okay; we are planning to sponsor some students for classes at the spring hill location nearer to where we live. giving of yourself february 9, 2016 our usual focus at jolly fitness is one of fitness; we center our giving activities around runs, swims and other athletic endeavors for charity. however, in the last year, something else has come up on our radar and that is, giving away your hair. yes, that's right...your hair. a child member of our group had an injury during the past summer that precluded her from participating in any events for the rest of the year. as you can imagine, this did not sit well with her. because we believe in doing things as families, and as a group, we began to search for a way she could stay active in her giving lifestyle. this is how we found locks of love . locks of love is a non-profit organization that collects real human hair from donors and uses it to make hairpieces for children who are suffering hair loss due to medical procedures or illness. they accept straight hair, curly hair, any color hair (even gray, which they sell). there are two things to know if you thin
